“Design is thinking made visual.” – Graphic designer Saul Bass Digital signage has its own design discipline. It’s not the same as print, or web, or television. Digital signage design needs to bring focus and context to a brand’s story without some of the usual tricks – such as using sound with video. And it calls for a specific infrastructure for production and delivery unlike that for print, web and video. As a matter of fact, since it’s dynamic and motion-oriented, digital signage design has more in common with two other fields of design – animation and movie titles – […]

A big challenge. The Holy Grail. What keeps HR people up at night. Those are only a few descriptions in a handful of articles covering the struggle to understand what engages employees — and how to create workplaces that offer them what they need for motivation and maximum performance. What engages them varies by the study, but two elements seem clear: Money isn’t the answer. Pay and benefits are important, but not the most deciding factor. More personal aspects of the workplace, such as people and purpose, play a critical role. While we’re not undertaking a comprehensive review of the […]
I’m back from retail’s Big Show — last week’s NRF convention and expo in New York City, which hosted nearly 35,000 attendees, offered hundreds of sessions and showcased miles of retail technology, including Convergent’s digital signage capabilities. We were one of only a handful of digital signage providers with a booth, so we were busy with meetings and visits and made a lot of great contacts, all having something interesting to say about the industry in general and their businesses in particular. Here’s a taste of what we saw and heard while we were there. Retail challenges are top of mind […]
It’s coming up on a year since we declared that the digital signage industry is broken and introduced our new service model: Digital Signage as a Service, or DSaaS. Since then, we’ve talked to hundreds of customers, prospects and industry analysts and influencers about DSaaS, how it works and the results it brings to an organization’s bottom line – both in terms of expenditures and sales uplift. In the many conversations we’ve had about DSaaS, one question we hear frequently is, “Why shouldn’t I just lease my equipment from a vendor? Leasing doesn’t seem any different from DSaaS.” Actually, the […]
A blog from someone else in the digital signage industry recently called out those who might be pushing the envelope with marketing claims. One such claim the blogger took issue with: “Digital signage is easy.” That one struck me in particular, because we hear it often from prospects who have preconceived notions about digital signage (usually gained from talking with other vendors) and who are thinking about buying hardware and software, but running their own networks. The fact is, software has gotten more intuitive, and managing just a handful of screens can be relatively easy. You might be able to […]
The holidays are over, and as we enter 2017, we’re gearing up for NRF’s Big Show, retail’s largest trade event of the year. That’s fitting, given the amount of time I spent in the mall last month, searching for the perfect gifts for my friends and family. I hit a bunch of stores, many of which I wouldn’t normally enter, but that gave me the perfect opportunity to check out their retail digital signage. I saw some great examples of it. A couple of stores were using street-facing signage to effectively capture attention and drive store traffic. Others were leveraging […]
2016: A big year for digital signage in general and Convergent in particular. We’re growing, and the industry itself looks to be on target to edge over the $20 billion mark in worldwide sales predicted in the next couple of years. In that spirit, we got out our crystal ball and made some of our own predictions for the coming year. Here are six of the biggest trends we expect to see in our industry in 2017. In addition to me, our prognosticators include my colleagues Greg Davis, vice president, sales and marketing; Trevor Davies, chief architect; Adam Shilling, […]
